News for the New Year - Joining the DKW stable! Also, what happened to 2018.

Q: Uh, you seem to have fallen off the face of the earth. Why is that?

A:  I ran away to a Greek island, got a lot of writing done, worked with an honest-to-god group of superheroes volunteering to help the plight of refugees, spent two months in a basement in Turkey, got a lot of writing done, and, you know, stuff.

It's been some time, eh? Not that you would have noticed my absence -- my science rants have found a new home on the Cosmic Shambles Network, where not only can you see me sarking about the future of our species, but there are a ton of other great writers too. I've been doing talks and events too - Cheltenham Science Festival with Adam Rutherford, Pontus Skoglund, and Alice Roberts; Nine Lessons with Robin Ince and his gang of insane scientists, and more to come in 2019!

But EVEN MORE EXCITING -- I've got an agent!

 The amazing Ella Diamond Kahn is now saddled with the task of taking my writing out into the world, and coming back with money, an appropriate number of chickens, etc. Wherever the economy takes us. With Ella's help I'll hopefully be bringing you some new long-form musings in good time and of course working on my real goal: recreating the Algonquin round table, but with science writers in north London ;)

Well, I thought I would expand a bit on my AR post, mostly because people seem a lot more interested in awesome hovering 3d images than in the metric qualification of surface expressions of ameloblast disruption (yeah... I know, go figure, right?). So here's an easy, totally free, step by step guide to making your own awesome bit of archaeology float around: You'll need: A webcam. Google Sketchup . This is a fantastic little offering from google which makes it ridiculously easy to create accurate 3d models. You can create any shape you like, though I find recreating structures is the easiest place to start (die, CAD, die). There's a startup guide here , but you can get fairly complicated if you'd like. You can also import stuff in; using freeware like Blender  you can easily convert 3d objects produced in other formats into something Google can read. we be #blogarch December: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Welcome to round two of the #blogarch adventure, orchestrated by Dougsarchaeology . This month, the question posed to those of us who still do this blogging thing is more reflective: what's been good about blogging? Bad? And what's been downright ugly? Well geez. The Good Friends! Contacts, networks, people to talk to. But I think more importantly, blogging offers a longform elaboration of the casual conversations and offhand interests that the 140 character world doesn't really give you a chance to get into. For instance, I am pretty good at working up a #twitterstorm rage. I've had lots of social media chats with friends and strangers about things that seriously, epically get my metaphorical goat ( looking at you , #aquaticape! also, druid in-fighting ). But here's the thing about an insta-rage: you sound like a total jerk. Seriously. That rage needs context . And maybe pictures of the Judean People's Front (splitters!). literally, any excuse to use

Five months, five countries, some fieldwork and a lot of talks. Living the dream, if the dream is to run out of clean socks.

So... I realise I haven't updated this, much less ranted, for some time. This is partially excused by the fact that I've been in France, Italy, the UK, Greece and Turkey for varying amounts of time over the last five months. But it's not like I wasn't WORKING. Jeez. We had an epic field season on Kythera in August, which was a triumph of fieldwalking spirit over footwear-themed adversity. Also, Satch and I made matching hats in honour of our Antikytheran legacy. Field hats in the Antikytheran style. Gonna need longer gaiters. Schematic of boot failure mechanics (Day 20).
